MESSAGE QUESTIONS

We continue in our 7-week series in the “I Am” statements of Jesus. This week is “I Am the Light of the World.” Jesus reveals himself to us through seven “I Am” statements in the book of John. This Sunday, the big idea is, Jesus is the presence of God in the world. Our passage is John 8:12-20.

Use  these questions to discuss the message from Sunday, focusing on how you can grow as an everyday follower of Jesus and how you can go accomplish what Jesus calls you to do.

  1.  Have someone read Exodus 13:21. What is the significance of light in this text? What did the light do for the wandering Israelites?

  2. Read John 8:12. Pastor Wyatt talked about Sukkot (the Jewish Festival of Booths). People are in Jerusalem, living in tents, giving tithes, making sacrifices, and priests are lighting lights during this festival. How does this context help you understand the power of Jesus’ claim, that he is the light of the world? Looking at Jesus is the best way to see who God is; how can you look to Jesus to guide you?

  3. Have someone read John 3:19-21 and John 1:1-5. What do we learn about darkness from John? What do we learn about light? Have you experienced a time when you were comfortable with darkness and seen light shine in that darkness?

  4. Pastor Wyatt ended the service with an invitation to reflect on what you need to bring to Jesus because he has conquered darkness. How has bringing your sin to Jesus caused you to grow in your relationship with him?

  5. Jesus is the light of the world, the very presence of God that guides, exposes, and expels. How can you go to the relationships God has placed in your life and show them Jesus, as the guiding light of your life?
