Message Questions
Arguably no one was closer to Jesus than John. Known as “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” John got to see the abundant life of Jesus up close and personal. And after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension, John experienced a life of following Jesus longer than any other New Testament author. Now, at the end of a life well lived, having nearly finished the race, John has some thoughts he’d like to share with us. What does it look like to embrace the new life that Jesus offers us? What will bring abundance and joy? According to John, it looks like walking in love, truth, and light. This week we are in 1 John 1:5-2:2, and the big idea is: Following Jesus means walking in the light.
Use these questions to discuss the message from Sunday, focusing on how you can grow as an everyday follower of Jesus and how you can go accomplish what Jesus calls you to do.
- Have someone read 1 John 1:5-7. John says that God is light and that walking in the light leads to fellowship and forgiveness. What does it look like in everyday life to “walk in the light”? How is it different from walking in darkness?
- Have someone read 1 John 1:8-10. Why do you think confession is so central to the Christian life? What keeps us from confessing sin honestly, and what helps you move toward confession?
- Have someone read 1 John 2:1-2. John says we have an advocate in Jesus when we sin. How does knowing Jesus is your advocate change how you view your failures and struggles?
- Where is God inviting you to grow in walking in the light—whether that’s through honesty, repentance, or pursuing deeper fellowship with others?
- Who do you know who needs to hear about the forgiveness and freedom found in Jesus? How can you go and share that message with them this week?
