So That the World May Know
Big Idea: If we don’t fully go into all the world, we cannot fully know the peace, joy, and love Jesus longs to give.
Jesus gives us PEACE as we go.
John 14:27
Jesus gives us JOY as we go.
John 14:28
Jesus gives us LOVE as we go.
John 14:30-31
Missions statistic: 40% of the world is still “unreached” with no access to a church or a Christian.
The changing face of Global Christianity
- In 1900, about 80 percent of the world’s Christian population lived in the Western world. By 2000, only 37 percent of Christians lived in the Western world, and nearly two-thirds lived in the majority world.
- China is projected to have more Christians than any other country by 2030.
- The face of “world Christianity” is not a white male, but an African woman.
What is One Village Transformed?
One Village Transformed: A partnership between World Concern, your church, and a village “at the end of the road”. World Concern’s approach to transformation is holistic and addresses not only the physical needs in a community, but spiritual ones as well. OVT starts by listening to community members. Each village identifies their greatest needs AND their greatest resources. This drives the process of partnership and change.
Message Questions
If you only had hours left to live, what would you do? For Jesus, he chose to spend his last moments before going to the cross teaching his disciples the most important truths they would need to cling to once he was gone. These are the things Jesus knew they needed to know, and we do too. In this message series, we’ll be diving into John 13-16 as we learn more about the Heart of the Teacher: Jesus’ Final Words. This week we are in John 14:27-31, and the big idea is: If we don’t fully go into all the world, we cannot fully know the peace, joy, and love Jesus longs to give.
Use these questions to discuss the message from Sunday, focusing on how you can grow as an everyday follower of Jesus and how you can go accomplish what Jesus calls you to do.
- Have someone read John 14:27. Jesus promises to give us his peace, not as the world gives. How is the peace that Jesus offers different from worldly peace? How have you experienced his peace in moments of uncertainty or fear?
- Have someone read John 14:28. Jesus tells his disciples to rejoice that he is going to the Father. What does this reveal about finding joy in God's plan, even when it may not seem easy? How can you cultivate a deeper sense of joy as you follow where Jesus leads?
- Have someone read John 14:30-31. Jesus was obedient to the Father "so that the world may know" his love. How does obedience to God's calling demonstrate his love to the world? Have you ever experienced God’s love more deeply through stepping out in faith?
- Pastor Steve highlighted how Christianity is rapidly growing in places like China and Africa, and how ministries like One Village Transformed are reaching unreached people. What steps can you take to grow in your awareness of global missions? How can you participate in what God is doing beyond your immediate community?
- Jesus calls us to go so that the world may know him. Whether locally or globally, how can you go and share the love, joy, and peace of Jesus with someone this week? What specific action is God calling you to take?
