Message Questions

If you only had hours left to live, what would you do? For Jesus, he chose to spend his last moments before going to the cross teaching his disciples the most important truths they would need to cling to once he was gone. These are the things Jesus knew they needed to know, and we do too. In this message series, we’ll be diving into John 13-16 as we learn more about the Heart of the Teacher: Jesus’ Final Words. This week we are in John 14:1-7, and the big idea is: Jesus moves us from troubled hearts to true hope.

Use these questions to discuss the message from Sunday, focusing on how you can grow as an everyday follower of Jesus and how you can go accomplish what Jesus calls you to do.

  1. Have someone read John 14:1. Jesus tells his disciples, “Don’t let your heart be troubled.” What are some common reasons people struggle with fear and anxiety today? How does trusting in Jesus bring peace in the midst of uncertainty?
  2. Now have someone read John 14:2-3 and Revelation 21:3. Jesus reveals our future with God, promising that he is preparing a place for us. How does this promise of eternity with God bring hope to our daily lives?
  3. Have someone read John 14:6. Jesus declares that he is the way, the truth, and the life. What does this statement mean for those who seek to know God? How does this challenge the belief that all religions lead to God?
  4. Isaiah 53:3-6 describes how Jesus carried our pain and suffering. How can reflecting on his sacrifice help you grow in trusting him during difficult seasons? What steps can you take to deepen your faith in Jesus as your source of hope?
  5. 1 Peter 1:3-4 speaks of a "living hope" through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. How can you demonstrate this living hope to those around you—whether through your words, actions, or attitude—so that they see Christ in you? Who in your life needs to experience this hope, and how can you intentionally show it to them this week?
