Message Questions
If you only had hours left to live, what would you do? For Jesus, he chose to spend his last moments before going to the cross teaching his disciples the most important truths they would need to cling to once he was gone. These are the things Jesus knew they needed to know, and we do too. In this message series, we’ll be diving into John 13-16 as we learn more about the Heart of the Teacher: Jesus’ Final Words. This week we are in John 13:21-38, and the big idea is: Jesus shows us how to love so we can show how Jesus loves.
Use these questions to discuss the message from Sunday, focusing on how you can grow as an everyday follower of Jesus and how you can go accomplish what Jesus calls you to do.
- Have someone read John 13:34. Jesus gives his disciples a new command to love one another just as he has loved them. What makes this love new? How does Jesus’ example redefine the way we love others?
- Now have someone read John 13:21 and C.S. Lewis’ quote on love (see below). Jesus was deeply troubled knowing Judas would betray him, yet he still extended love. How does vulnerability play a role in Christlike love? What fears or barriers keep us from loving others in this way?
- Now have someone read John 13:36-38. Peter was confident in his devotion to Jesus, yet he would deny him three times. What does this reveal about our human tendency to overestimate our own strength? How can we remain humble and dependent on Christ as we seek to love others?
- Romans 12:19-21 calls us to respond to evil with good. In what ways can you grow in loving those who are difficult to love? How can you practice Jesus' kind of love in your daily life this week?
- Jesus shows us how to love so we can show how Jesus loves. Who in your life needs to experience this kind of love? What is one way you can go and demonstrate Christ’s love to them this week?
