We’re in a year-long journey through the books of 1 and 2Samuel, tracing the rise, reign, and legacy of Israel’s most famous king. We’llsee the story of how God works through real people with real flaws to accomplish hispurposes. This week we are in 1Samuel9-10, and the bigideais: Even as our mixed motives lead to disastrous results, God quietly draws us back to himself. 

Use these questions to discuss the message from Sunday, focusing on how you can grow as an everyday follower of Jesus and how you can go accomplish what Jesus calls you to do.

  1. Have someone read 1 Samuel 9:1–5. What do we learn about Saul’s appearance and background in these verses? How do these first details serve as a “mirror” for Israel’s desires in a king?
  2. Have someone read 1 Samuel 9:6–10. How do we see God quietly at work through ordinary circumstances in this story? Where have you seen God’s quiet hand guiding details in your own life?
  3. Have someone read 1 Samuel 9:19–21. How does Saul respond to Samuel’s words, and what does this reveal about his insecurities? How do you relate to Saul’s struggle to see himself as God sees him?
  4. What would it look like to grow in trusting God’s evaluation of you over your own insecurities or the expectations of others?
  5. How could you go encourage someone this week who feels insignificant, reminding them that God sees and calls them for his purposes?
