I Am the Resurrection and the Life
Big Idea: Jesus is eternal life right now and forever.
Jesus: I am the resurrection and the life.
Sometimes Jesus leads us into hardship for God’s glory and for our good.
Jesus is eternal life right now and forever.
We continue in our 7-week series in the “I Am” statements of Jesus. This week is “I Am the Resurrection and the Life.” Jesus reveals himself to us through seven “I Am” statements in the book of John. This Sunday, the big idea is, Jesus is eternal life here and now. Our passage is John 11:1-44.
Use these questions to discuss the message from Sunday, focusing on how you can grow as an everyday follower of Jesus and how you can go accomplish what Jesus calls you to do.
Have you ever desperately asked God for something that he didn’t give you? How has that impacted your faith?
Read John 11:5-6. How do you make sense of Jesus staying put because he loves Martha, Mary, and Lazarus? Can you believe that God allows incredibly difficult things in your life because he loves you?
Have someone read John 11:33-36. If Jesus intentionally allowed Lazarus to die, and he also knows that he is about to raise him from the dead, why does Jesus weep? How does Jesus’ emotional response make you think about his response to your own grief?
Do you struggle more with believing that God will actually answer your prayers or with disappointment when he doesn’t? How can you grow in both believing that Jesus does the miraculous today and also accepting that in this life we will have trouble?
How can faith in Jesus as the resurrection and the life help you go towards people in your life who are in grief? How can you offer hope without being dismissive of their pain?
