Where has God established you?

Message Questions

We’re in a year-long journey through the books of 1 and 2 Samuel, tracing the rise, reign, and legacy of Israel’s most famous king. We’ll see the story of how God works through real people with real flaws to accomplish his purposes. This week we are in 2 Samuel 5, and the big idea is: God has placed me where I am and given me what I have so that I can be a blessing to others.

Use these questions to discuss the message from Sunday, focusing on how you can grow as an everyday follower of Jesus and how you can go accomplish what Jesus calls you to do.

  1. Have someone read 2 Samuel 5:1-2. The tribes of Israel recognize David as their leader not just because of his military success, but because of God’s specific promise that he would "shepherd" his people. How does the imagery of a shepherd change the way we view power and leadership compared to the way the world often defines a "ruler"?
  2. Have someone read 2 Samuel 5:12. The text emphasizes that David realized his kingdom was exalted "for the sake of [God's] people Israel." Why is it so easy to forget that the things God gives us—our positions, talents, or resources—are ultimately intended for the benefit of others rather than our own personal comfort?
  3. Have someone read Mark 10:42-45 and John 13:15-17. Jesus explicitly contrasts the "rulers of the Gentiles" who act as tyrants with the path of a servant. How does David’s realization in 2 Samuel 5 align with Jesus' example of being a "slave to all," and what does it mean practically to follow this example in our modern workplaces or families?
  4. Reflecting on the question "How has God blessed you?", what is one specific resource or talent God has given you that you need to grow in using for the benefit of others rather than just for yourself?
  5. Since God has placed you exactly where you are for a purpose, how can you go and be a blessing to someone in your specific neighborhood or social circle this week, acting as a "messenger" of the one who sent you?
