How the Mighty Fall
Big Idea: A disconnected heart creates a distorted world.
“I have discovered that all the unhappiness of men arises from one single fact, that they cannot stay quietly in their own room.” - Blaise Pascal
Disconnecting distorts enjoyment and trades it for pleasure.
Why do we disconnect?
- Because we can!
- Because we prefer comfort to growth.
- Because we don’t know ourselves.
- Because we have more free time.
- Because we don’t FEEL we NEED God.
Are you enjoying life or pursuing pleasure?
Disconnecting distorts power and trades it for pride.
“(A) proud man will take your girl from you, not because he wants her, but just to prove to himself that he is a better man than you...power is what pride really enjoys; there is nothing makes a man feel so superior to others as being able to move them about like toy soldiers.” - C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
Are you using power to love people or to use people?
Disconnecting distorts you.
Message Questions
We’re in a year-long journey through the books of 1 and 2 Samuel, tracing the rise, reign, and legacy of Israel’s most famous king. We’ll see the story of how God works through real people with real flaws to accomplish his purposes. This week we are in 2 Samuel 11, and the big idea is: A disconnected heart creates a distorted world.
Use these questions to discuss the message from Sunday, focusing on how you can grow as an everyday follower of Jesus and how you can go accomplish what Jesus calls you to do.
- Have someone read 2 Samuel 11:1-2. David remains in Jerusalem while his army is at war. Why can staying in a place of comfort often lead to a heart that is disconnected from God?
- Have someone read 2 Samuel 11:10-11. Uriah refuses to enjoy the comforts of home while his fellow soldiers are in the field. How does his integrity highlight the pride and distortion in David’s heart?
- Have someone read 2 Samuel 11:26-27. David thinks he has successfully covered his sin, but the text says God saw it as evil. Why is it dangerous to assume we are fine just because we have managed to keep our actions hidden from others?
- Since David fell after he stopped feeling his daily need for God, what is one specific habit you can change to grow in your active dependence on him?
- How can you go and use your current influence or power to serve someone this week instead of using it for your own pride or pleasure?
