Jon & Amie Cross
SIM, East Africa
Dear Alderwood family,
Greetings from Kenya. We wanted to update you on a significant change in Jonathan’s role. This last week, after a final voting process he was appointed as the country director for SIM in South Sudan. This role became effective immediately. He will still be coordinating the clean drinking program as he looks for someone to take his place. However, he will be shifting his priorities into building and raising up the entire team working in South Sudan. Currently some of the ministries in South Sudan include; outreach and discipleship with unreached people groups in refugee camps; church discipleship which raises up and builds capacity in the local churches; medical ministries such as a clinic for care for the community, a pharmacy for medical distribution, a maternity ward, and a leprosy program.
He is most excited about investing in the individuals on our team that are serving so that they can be the most effective in the skills God has given them. In addition to this, it is important to develop new strategies as our capacities have changed over time so we can be the most effective with the resources and personnel we have to reach our vision, to have Christ centered churches and disciples in communities where He is least known.
Due to the impact of Covid-19, this is an opportune time to work through these things with our team. Because of flight restrictions and border closures, our non-south Sudanese workers are no longer in South Sudan. Our South Sudanese workers continue in the work with guidance from afar and it gives us a chance to step back and evaluate how we can make the ministries more sustainable.
Here in Kenya we also are seeking to use our resources wisely as many are struggling with social distancing restrictions in place to help stop the spread of Covid. Many live day-to-day for pay, so these restrictions are quite difficult. Amie is crisis schooling and homeschooling our kiddos and providing chaplaincy care as well. Please pray for us to have wisdom and vision as we lead.
